Streaming services have revolutionized how we watch TV, which is why Smart TVs have become a must-have for many households. With convenient access to apps like Amazon Prime, HBO, YouTube, and most recently Disney+, Smart TVs make our lives a little easier as we try to navigate the ever changing media landscape.
But what happens when a beloved service like Netflix is no longer supported on several consumer electronic devices? Unfortunately, for users of certain Samsung Smart TVs, first-generation Roku boxes and older Vizio TVs, Netflix’s integration will stop working. Starting December 2nd of this year, Netflix will no longer be available on select Samsung Smart TVs due to “technical limitations.” The irony of December 2nd being Cyber Monday did not pass us by.

[Updated 11/8/19] Netflix has announced that due to technical limitations, as of December 2, 2019, the Netflix streaming service will no longer be supported on several consumer electronics devices, including some from Samsung. This change will impact select 2010 and 2011 Samsung Smart TV models that were sold in the U.S. and Canada. Affected devices will receive a notification reflecting this change.
If you use one of the select 2010 or 2011 Samsung Smart TV models, don’t panic. Samsung has their recommendations for how to continue watching your favorite Netflix shows and movies. Samsung recommends using other Netflix compatible devices that can be connected to your Smart TV. Streaming media players such as Apple TV, PlayStation or Xbox game consoles, or even set-top boxes like Xfinity or TiVo will allow you to continue enjoying the streaming service.
While this problem is not unique to Netflix (since both Hulu and YouTube have dropped support for older Smart TV models as well), it’s evident that rapid technology changes will eventually force users to upgrade older hardware.
